The event put on by Scott Johnson who runs Extra Life Radio, consisted of the movie Star Trek, a get together at a nearby park and an out-of-towner barbeque at the Johnson house. An what an awesome time it was. My brother in law Garrett and I drove up to Salt Lake City, UT for the weekend so we could be a part of the festivities and we had a blast. Looking forward to next year!

So it’s going back to Amazon pronto….. hopefully the next one doesn’t have the same issue. If it does I’ll just return it and wait until revision B. I really should know better by now. Rule #1 of Apple laptops. Never buy a revision A of any of them. This is what I get.

##UPDATE ##

So had number 2 arrive, this one had a dead pixel. Bummer! It’s going back as well. Probably try one more time. After that I give up.

Well as expected the year has been busy although January seems like it has been here forever. I have been wanting to be able to ride my Vespa more but it’s just too cold in the morning to take it to work so I am looking forward to temps warming up a little so I can hit the road. Heck I’d really like it I had time after work to just explore the valley some and just ride, but alas too much work to do! Maybe I’ll try and make it happen soon just so I can de-romanticize it from my mind. I REALLY need to pick up a new Mac. If Apple would hurry up and release a new Mini, then that would get my purchase, if not might just hold out and pick up a Macbook. The main problem is feature creep. If i just go for the Macbook, then the Macbook Pro is far above that and I know I will kick myself for not just picking it up. Aside from that I just have been missing having a Mac as my main machine terribly. It’s totally messing with how much work I can get done. Look I mean the Vista box I have is ok, and I like my eee PC but it ain’t cutting it aside from note taking, and minor work tasks.

So I hadn’t been too big on doing any home automation but for some crazy reason I really got a bug about setting up some automation. So this last week or so I have been trying some different solutions and setting up some devices and have finally rounded out the start to my home automation adventure. The setup consists of the following:

A Insteon ToggleLinc Relay and few SwitchLinc – Insteon switches for lights

A Venstar 7-day programmable Thermostat and Insteon Thermostat control

A pair of Insteon Access Points

A Insteon PowerLinc USB Controller

My first attempt for software was MControl. Yeah…. can’t really recommend it lot’s of weird issues lots of trouble pairing devices to the PLC (PowerLincController) and support forums should just be called “Forums” got zero help there. I then tried a couple other Windows apps. See I have a Media server I had planned on using to use as my be-all-end-all system for all things home/media related. It’s an home built server that consists of:

3 x 1TB Western Digital Caviar GP (low power consumption)

HighPoint RocketRAID 2310 PCI Express

AMD Athlon X2 BE-2350 Brisbane 2.1GHz Socket AM2 45W (low power consumption)

Currently that box has 1.8 TB (1800 Gigs) of storage of which I have about 1 TB filled with my movie collection which is growing every day. Anyway the deal was to try and run everything on that box. Well since I couldn’t find any Windows software that didn’t have one issue or another so my search brought me to Indigo for OS X. The software works great! The only issue is I did not want to run it on my iMac and have to be concerned about the computer being asleep, rebooting, or off…. soooooo I had to get a Mac Mini and put it in the “Tech Closet”. I just wish I could find some more cool things to do with the Mini I feel bad it’s only being tasked with only automating the house….The coolest part is I have made al sorts of custom control pages that work on my iPhone so I can check the status of lights and the AC while we aren’t home and turn things on and off at will. It’s awesome!

What a way to start the day… Woke up to an alarm sounding in the office. Turns out a hard drive on my media server died this morning. Great. Mark my words that is THE LAST MAXTOR drive I ever buy. Period. This is like the 4th one I have die on me in 4 years. From now on it’s Seagate drives. Luckily I had the RAID configured so no data was lost. On my way down to PC Club to grab a new drive. Bleck.

Lost returns tomorrow. After nearly 8 months off which seems like years. Looking forward to watching it with the family, we are watching the premiere at my parents house with all the various siblings and the following week we are watching it at our place. I know why am I going into detail, who cares, right? Well just want to say that if you haven’t been watching Lost in HD you are missing out. Period. It really is a straight up beautifully filmed in a beautiful location. Sometimes I can almost smell the jungle. Ok maybe that was taking it too far. But it really is a 1,000 times better in HD. So what does this do with my parents house and watching it? They are on Standard Def and it really is like a cheese grater on my eyes. So much so I always re-watch the episode the next day on my HDTV at home. No joke. Do yourself a favor watch Lost in HD and if you need to catch up on past seasons do yourself a favor and pick up Season 3 on Blu-Ray and see Lost in even higher fidelity than broadcast (ABC broadcasts Lost in 720p the Blu-ray version is at 1080p if you have set that can handle the resolution).
